The Topic Classification Used on this Site

Articles and references on this site are classified into five broad topic areas discussed below:

The News topic is for topical articles about kaitiakitanga. It is intended for listing sources that provide up-to-date news as well as older news articles (and archives)

The Theory topic is for theoretical and scientific articles that discuss kaitiaki science including traditional and indigenous knowledge, indigenous world-views as well as western science. It includes the academic field known as Traditional Ecological Knowledge.

The Links topic is for web pages and directories, that do not themselves contain news or other information, but contain pointers or links to information.

The Advocacy and Organising topic is for resources aimed at improving the effectiveness of kaitiaki through networking, up-skilling, planning and organisation. This topic includes resources that may not be directly related to kaitiaki issues, but enable kaitiaki to operate more effectively.

The Kaitiaki Practice topic is for practical information about how kaitiaki knowledge is applied at a flax roots level. Most articles in this topic will be specific to one location. Some issues covered might be: iwi management plans, case law, fisheries management, local approaches to working with the Resource Management Act, eco-tourism and other businesses based around natural resources.
