Announcing the launch of a comprehensive website for Pukaha Mt Bruce - the National Wildlife Centre in the Wairarapa - www.mtbruce.org.nz.

New Zealand's premiere centre of species recovery, learning in conservation and Te Taiao. A partnership between Rangitaane o Wairarapa iwi, Department of Conservation and the National Wildlife Centre Trust.

The site contains lots of information on New Zealand's native biodiversity including a comprehensive gallery with free downloadable images of most of NZ's native fauna. It provides Maori legends associated with most animals and contains information on the Rangitaane history of the Wairarapa and their relationship with the environment

discussion paper by the Ministry of Consumer Affairs and the New Zealand Food Safety Authority on the development of a voluntary GM free labelling system for food and food products was released on 11 April 2003 and is available on the Ministry of Consumer Affairs website. The paper results from a recommendation of the Royal Commission on Genetic Modification.

Maori rules 'stall science'

Demands on scientists to have Maori support or approval for research is strangling science, researchers say. Canterbury University head of zoology Frank Sin has been knocked back on his bid for Government funding for research into paua growth because it did not have strong enough Maori connections, only months after he was knocked back on genetic research into paua and lobster because Ngai Tahu did not approve it. "We have to get support from Maori before we can do the most basic research," he complained. "I know the Government has to be seen to be conscious about the Treaty of Waitangi, which is fair enough, but the way things are done is too extreme. "It's strangling our science and the economy."
