The Pöwhiri System

The Pöwhiri System is based on the "Trust Metric" software developed for Advogato . The system was designed to recognise the combination of talent and dedication of free software developers, but has been modified to provide recognition of involvement in kaitiaki work at three levels: Manuhiri, Te Hunga Käinga, and Te Komiti Whakahaere. All these levels are determined by peer certification. These certificates are entered in individual records from the People page. This document explains what the levels mean, and guidelines for deciding what level to use.

Please feel free to welcome all of the people you know who have accounts here, especially those who have not received many welcome messages (or certificates as they are called in the original system). The "trust metric" software used to evaluate the certificates (and decide which group people belong to) is most robust when there are many certifications.

To welcome someone on to the site, make sure you're logged in, then go to the person's page and use the pulldown form.

Te Komiti Whakahaere

In choosing this level, you are anouncing your confidence that the person is active in kaitiaki activities and you are also giving your vote for that person to be an executive officer of the (proposed) Incorporated Society. You may choose this level for as many people as you like, but, keep in mind that the executive committee should be kept to a manageable size.

Te Hunga Käinga

These are the people you know and recognise for their contributions to kaitiaki work. They are people whose comments you would be interested in reading on the site, as they have the right to contribute articles to appear on the main directory page. Members of this group are automatically members of the Society.

Manuhiri

This group is for people you are not familiar with, or are friends, but who are not involved in kaitiaki work. People in this group are not entitled to contribute articles, but may enter comments on articles. They are not members of the Society.

Evaluation of the Certificates

The certificates created when you welcome people on to the site are evaluated using the trust metric software. Please note that the trust metrics ensure that the existing members have the greatest say in deciding the ultimate level to which a person is welcomed.
