Pukaha /Mt Bruce restoration project

Here is an opportunity for you to get involved in the restoration of Pukaha - Mt Bruce

Last Friday (21/06/02) was the launch of the Pukaha project. The project aims to create a mainland island that will eventually be home to: 600 kaka 400 kokako 500 kiwi and thousands of tui, fantails, silvereyes and other native species

DoC, Rangitaane O Wairarapa and the National Wildlife Centre Trust have combined to put together a CD of native birdsong taken from hundreds of recordings over the last 50 years and melded together to recreate the birdsong of yesteryear. The CD is available from DoC for $30 (it will be on general release in music shops later this year for $34.50).

There are four tracks on this CD.

Track 1 - recreates the morning birdsong from the rising sun and the bellbird to late morning.

Track 2 - brings the day chorus dominated by the sound of the kaka

Track 3 - is a composition of waiata by Rangitaane O Wairarapa - a dedication to the Huia

Track 4 - is the night chorus, including the morepork and kiwi

The Pukaha project also offers an opportunity for you to sponsor a hectare of Mt Bruce forest for $25 per year. Funds raised will go towards cutting 130km of tracks, pest eradication, pest plant eradication and ongoing maintenance. You will receive a certificate and your name will also go on the Pukaha website. DoC will also send you regular updates on progress at Mt Bruce
