Kia ora koutou

He patai....

Some of you may be aware of the 12 logs which currently lie in waiting at Iwitea. These logs are tapu to the Kohititanga Marama.

Iwitea falls within the Wairoa District Council (WDC) boundary. I have recently been made aware the WDC granted permission for oil exploration to be undertaken within the Wairoa District. Some the exploration results have returned positive. To my alarm, oil exploration was granted to be carried out by the logs. This has also shown positive.

Tangata whenua are concerned, should drilling for oil be carried by the logs, they will be disturbed, but more importantly, could be destroyed.

Can anyone offer advice detailing the rights of the tangata whenua as kaitiaki of the logs, if there is any protection mechanism available for the logs and what (if any) rights the WDC has concerning the logs and the area the logs lie.

In this day and age, this kind of deliberate desceration of a waahi tapu is not acceptable. Come on, its 2001.
