Name: Susan Forbes

Notes: Tena koutou katoa. Kei te mihi nui ki a koutou i tenei wa. I am living near Paekakariki where the hills meet the sea and working mostly around the Head of the Fish on a range of heritage management and coastal ecology projects. I was part of the small team that participated in the Te Kupenga hui for wahi tapu protection and management and its great to see a facility like this web site for continuing that korero.

Kia ora "Ngaitu"

Just a quick response to your patai about the 12 logs at Iwitea. These logs can be protected under a range of mechanisms. You could register them as a wahi tapu area with the Historic PLaces Trust. This is a mechanism that kicks in if anyone applied for a resource consent for this area, making sure that the Maori Heritage Council and iwi were informed.

You could also make sure that they were listed as a wahi tapu on your District PLan. This could be kept in a confidential file if the hapu want. I can't remember what the Plan provides for but I know that Joan Ropiha has worked extensively on it over the years so it shoud be strong in this area!

You are right there should be no way that any activity should threaten the logs or the area around them. Get back to me kotuku@xtra.co.nz or people like Te Kenehi Teira at the Historic Places TRust teira@historic.org.nz

We are here to help! Good luck na susan
